In a previous article, we shared the news that our work on the Delville Wood War Memorial had been shortlisted for the 2017 GIfA Awards for Architecture. We can now reveal that we were awarded a Merit Certificate from GIfA at the award ceremony which took place on Thursday, 28 September.
To be recognised and singled out from a total of 38 world-class projects is a wonderful feeling. We share this honour with our partners, Mayat Hart Architects & Heritage Consultants.
History and heritage
The Delville Wood War Memorial is located in Longeuval, France. It serves to commemorate soldiers of the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force who last their lives serving in the First World War. A number of campaigns are commemorated here, including: the East Africa Campaign, the Battle of Delville Wood and the Battle of Aras.
South African replicas
Two replicas of the memorial can be found in South Africa. One appears at the Union Buildings, while another may be found in Cape Town in the Company’s Gardens.
While we may never know the names of many of the fallen soldiers commemorated by this memorial, we’re humbled to have worked on such an important project.
